James is Artistic Director of Royal & Derngate in Northampton. He was previously Associate Director at the New Vic Theatre and Theatre503. He is a 2018 Franco British Young Leader, a Trustee of Talawa Theatre Company and a Board Director of Spirit of 2012. 

James has directed and developed new work by playwrights Katori Hall, David Eldridge, Mike Poulton, Ella Hickson, Roy Williams, Amy Herzog, Amanda Whittington, Arthur Miller, Ron Hutchinson, Dawn King, Dan O'Brien, Dic Edwards, Suzan Lori Parks, Ed Kemp, Molly Davies, Torben Betts, Bekah Brunstetter, Lisa Peterson, Denis O'Hare and composers Rachel Portman, These New Puritans, Orlando Gough, White Lies, Valgeir Sigurðsson, James Johnston, The Bad Seeds and Elena Langer amongst others. As Artistic Director at Royal & Derngate, he has produced original work by Ayub Khan-Din, Nicholas Wright, David Greig, Tamsin Oglesby, Phil Porter, Ella Hickson, Oladipo Agboluaje, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Tim Crouch, Spymonkey, Seven Sisters Group, Laura Lomas, Guy Chambers, Wardrobe Ensemble, Simple8, Julia Donaldson, Sam Holcroft, Jessica Swale, Peepolykus and Georgia Pritchett amongst others. 

He has been awarded Fulbright and Schubert Fellowships in Theatre Directing, studied at Cambridge and Columbia Universities and trained on the ITV/Channel 4 Regional Theatre Director’s Scheme and as an Assistant Director to twelve directors including Anne Bogart, Robert Woodruff and Silviu Purcarete
